2.Conference: formal, often lasting for a few days, a

specialized professional or academic event, esp. at the international level. e.g. The Third International Conference on Urban Health will bring together members of the global research community and offer a forum for the discussion of the conference theme: The global Urban Health Agenda: Setting Priorities and Building Infrastructure.

Different kinds of meetings3. Symposium: a meeting for specialized academic discussion.Compared with conference, a symposium is usually narrower and more specific in the range of topics. In terms of scale, a symposium may be smaller than a conference, because sometimes a conference may include symposiums held simultaneously﹙as satellite symposiums﹚/. “working conference”. “ a political conference”( held by the government for political consultation ).

And it is usually rather large in scale and generally representative and extensive. e.g. The Fourth World Congress on Women, which was sponsored by the United Nations , was held in Beijing in 1994, with over 20,000 representatives from countries all over the world.

large gathering of people meet and discuss the business of their organization or political group. Usually it is regularly organized by a learned society, a professional association, an academic institution or a nongovernmental organiza

tion. e.g. a. the annual /biennial convention of the Metal Society Cf. biannual

b. The 2004 Republican National Convention will be held at Madison Square Garden in New York City August 30 through September 2, 2004.

The National Arab American Medical Association’s St. Louis Chapter(分会) hosts the 24th National Medical Convention entitled Refinements in Patient Care to be held from August 30 – September 2, 2002 at the Hyatt Regency - St. Louis at Union Station in St. Louis, Missouri. Organizers include Chapter President Alaa Elbendary, MD, Convention Chairman Edmond Cabbabe, MD, and Scientific Chairman Saadeh Al-Jureidini, MD. .

e.g. a. The ’09 Forum on Asian Economics was held in Singapore.b. A regular forum for the interchange

of information and ideas on health issues will be held annually.

Different kinds of meetings7. Seminar: a class-like meeting, where participants discuss a particular topic or subject that is presented by several majors speakers. Lecture+discussion e.g. On April 2nd 2004 we held an ITP Medical Seminar for health professionals only. Lectures and discussion groups featured leading specialists from the UK and US. They talked about ITP in adults, children, pregnancy, and women’s problems with ITP. The venue was Shuttleworth College, Old Warden Park, Biggleswade.

Workshop﹙研讨会，研讨班，专题讨论会﹚:a period of discussion or practical work on a particular subject in which a group of people learn about the subject by sharing their knowledge or experience; emphasizes practical performance, besides the professional and academic discussion; features many relevant activities---demonstrations, displays and operations during the course of presentation. e.g. 1. Ambulance Paramedic Clinical Practice Workshop

2. Dr. Linda chaired a workshop on artificial intelligence and software development. I saw there were lots of computers and software developers gathered in that lecture hall this morning.

Different kinds of meetings9. Colloquium﹙研讨会，学术讨论会﹚:a large academic seminar like panel discussion﹙专题小组讨论会﹚, attended by certain invited experts or professionals in a particular field. Participants of the meeting will express their ideas and opinions around a specific topic.e.g. The doctors’ association boycotted﹙refuse to attend﹚ a major international medical colloquium held in Amman because Israeli doctors attended.
