Teaching Aims

Teaching Procedures Step 1 Lead-in (Free talk)

1. Do a guess: Which continent is famous for them? (Africa)

2. The teacher can say，“Africa is a faraway but exciting place that welcomes you to visit. Apart from the pictures above, what else do you know about Africa?”

What places of interest are there? Look at the pictures, can you name theses places? The Sahara Desert—the biggest on the earth

River Nile---the longest river on the earth

Lake Victoria-the second largest freshwater lake Mount Kilimanjaro（Tanzania）

Do you think it is an island full of mystery, charm and attraction? Is it worthwhile going to Africa for your holiday? Though we haven't got a chance to visit, we can travel abroad by reading. Here is a passage about An adventure in Africa. (Teach the students how to pronounce the word “adventure and explain the meaning.) (Adventure is an unusual, exciting or dangerous experience.)

Step 2: Skim the whole text 1. Answer questions in Part A.

Q1. How will Colin and Toby travel through the desert? Q2. What activity does Toby think is dangerous? Q3. How long will the brothers stay in Africa?

2. Find Toby’s travelling route on the map Show the map on the screen. Ask students write down the route.

3. Put the activities in the order in PartC1

Step 3: Scan the passage for important information 1. Para1-2

(1) Find the answers to these questions.

So Morocco is their first destination for their summer vacation trip. From the map, we know that Morocco is located in northwestern part of Africa. Skim the first second paragraphs.

(2) Then finish PartC2 on page 24

2. Para.3 (So they want to relax at the next destination. What is it? The River Nile.) Read the third paragraph. Answer the question and fill in the blank.

3. Para.4-5 Fill in the blank (Who will tell me their next destination? Kenya)

4. Para. 6 The last destination is Tanzania Ask students to fill the blank.

5. Finish Part D on page24

Step 4 Detail Reading

Students read the paragraph 7-8 and answer the question

Where will they go before going back to London? (the Himalayas)

Step 5 Brainstorming (Have students discuss the questions in a group.)

Adventures such as mountain climbing and white-water rafting can be dangerous. Why do some people risk their lives for these kinds of adventure?

Do you think it is worth risking your life for adventure? Why or Why not?

Step 8 Homework

1. Read the text and try to retell it . 2. Find out the language points in the text.
