Abstract

The importance of actively improving oral English skills for English learners cannot be stressed enough. In order to be accepted into your work environment or classroom, you must have reached a minimum level of proficiency in English. However, first of all，as an English learner, you are expected to open your mouth and say everything you want to express. Developing excellent oral English skills as early as possible will allow you to effectively share ideas with other people. It will also make you more effective in conveying your ideas to people around you who use English as native language or a second, in the form of well-written papers, convincing presentations, and engaging personal conversations.

Retelling means people use their own understandings to refine or imitate an article which is similar to the text. By retelling what they have known, people can improve their ability to express in English. Oral English has its own features, but it is closely combined with other aspects of English, for example, retelling may make oral English precise and accurate. It is a good and practical way to improve oral English.

1. Introduction and the Aim of Improving Oral English

Oral English is an important part in learning English. As Chinese and Western various fields of exchange and cooperation are more closely, there is no doubt that the oral English is a grim challenge. It was reported: India may become a superpower in the 21st century, one of very important reasons for which is that 70 percent of the people can speak fluent oral English. Fortuna rely, our country is conducting a new round of curriculum reform. "Curriculum standards" stresses listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating which are the five essential basic language skills in the learning and the using of language. They are an important form of communication, and can form comprehensive language ability. Oral English is an important part in the use of language. Oral English has shown more and more important position.

We study oral English so as to make oral communications, with the economic globalization, more and more foreigners have come to seek their chances in China just because China is a huge market and they know that the huge market will give them unlimited business opportunities. They either make their investment in China or come to seek cooperation. When you are having an interview, you are sure to be asked many questions in English and of course you are expected to answer in English. If you do well, you stay, but if you cannot answer those questions well, you leave. That is to say, it is impossible for you to get the job. Many people are planning to further their study abroad and so naturally oral English is indispensable to them. So this order of importance of oral English study should be followed: Fluency, Accuracy and Appropriateness.

2. The Importance of Oral English

As an international language, English plays a very important role in today’s society. Since the entry of WTO in 2001, China has participated in more and more international co-operations. This irreversible tendency requires more and more highly-qualified English personnel in society. The final purpose of learning a language is to communicate with others, thus the oral expression is very crucial and is

the basic skill of using a language. Because of negligence and inadequate conditions, the present situation of learning oral English is not satisfactory; which has affected the people’s English learning. How to improve the people’s oral English has also become a problem which should be solved.

There is no doubt that English is one of the world's most widely used languages. People use a language in three ways: as a native language, as a second language, or as a foreign language. English is spoken as a native language by over three hundred million people in the United States, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, some Caribbean countries and South Africa. As a second language, English is often necessary for official business, education, information and other activities in many countries. As a foreign language, nearly 800 million people speak English; it is one of the few "working" languages of the United Nations.

Oral English is especially important in English. It is very clear and urgent that people attach oral English and try their best to improve their oral English. As a matter of fact, to be good at oral English is many people's dream, as they want to become international persons.

3. Retelling as an Effective Way of Improving Oral English It can improve the ability of oral expression. Retelling leads the learners to abandon the former way of just dealing with test papers, or caring much for their scores only, and it can stimulate their interest to speak out in English.
