Japan Looks Into Complaints on China Customs

The Japanese government is looking into complaints of customs delays for goods going to China following a recent rise in tensions between the two nations over a territorial dispute, government officials said Thursday.

The Japanese authorities have so far found no evidence of China blocking customs clearance for Japanese goods, but the level of concern is indicative of Japan’s fear of a recurrence of trade restrictions similar to those Beijing imposed two years ago after a flare-up in tension over the same dispute.

While we have been watching the situation carefully, we haven’t seen anything like what happened in 2010, for now, a senior Japanese official said. But this doesn’t mean we have let our guard down. We will remain watchful for the time being.

The official added that Japan hasn’t made any official inquiry about the reports to the Chinese government.

Japan’s automobile industry said Thursday it was concerned over reports of customs delays in China. The Japan Automobile Manufacturer Association will gather information from each member company, a vice chairman said, he didn’t identify any specific complaints.

The group will ask the government to deal with any trouble it

encounters, he added.

Japanese government officials said their offices, including the finance, trade and foreign ministries, have been contacting Japanese trading houses, auto makers customs staffs and various trade associations since last week for any instances of delays in customs clearance in China, Japan’s exports to China include cars, car parts, computer chips and flat panel for TVs.

China’s Commerce Ministry spokesman, while not to referring to any sanctions, said Wednesday that China-Japan economic relations would be hurt by the island dispute, although the only specifics he mentioned were the China-Japan-South Korea free-trade talks.

Earlier this month, the territorial disputes escalated again following Japan’s move to purchase the islands from former landlord. China condemned the move, and while it hasn’t said it will resort to economic sanctions, Chinese newspaper have called for such an action against Japan. The islands, called Senkaku in Japan, are also claimed by China and are known as Diaoyu island in Chinese. customs clearance
