Carol Whitman, CPCC art instructor, has a piece of work on display in the Pease Gallery as part of the Recycling Exhibition through 7 December. It 16 me as a piece of rather dark work, not 17 because of the colors and materials used, but more specially by the 18 image of a simplified human from a wooden frame by red thin threads made 19 wool. Most fearsome but meaningful is the heart itself, a lump of what I later found out was 20 , hanging there seemingly without connection to the rest of the body.
21 to know more and hearing a murmur(低语) that the painting had a story 22 it. I went in search of Whitman and 23 her in her cheerful overcast office, filled with paintings and sculptures. Whitman told me about her 24 in the east of Kentucky where her childhood revolved around(围绕) life in a mining town. 25 her parents were both teachers, the majority of their friends and neighbors were connected in some way to the mines.
When she 26 home after having moved away, she said she became increasingly conscious of the damage strip mining(露天采矿) caused to the 27 she called “home”. She was struck by how the tops of mountains were being knocked off and the mining companies didn’t 28 to reestablish the landscape because 20 years ago it was cheaper for them to pay the fines than restore the landscape. Shocked by the 29 , she was inspired to create art reflecting her 30 of coal mining.
The figure in her piece is a mother earth figure and is made up of photographs of strip mines.“You could 31 the piece in several ways. It could be about the condition the earth is in, or it could be a(n) 32 reaction to the state the earth is in. I would hope it exists on both levels, personal and physical,” said Whitman.
·3·
I didn’t noticed the strip mine initially 33 the beauty of the foreground, 34 sure enough, there was an annoyingscar reminding us that natural beauty is a fragile thing, easily destroyed and painfully slow to restore. Whitman’s 35 shows us all of that and leaves us looking for more.
16.A.moved B. struck C. held D. took 17.A.merely B. shortly C. hardly D. actually 18.A.touching B. disappointing C. pleasing D. disturbing 19.A.from B. by C. of D. into 20.A.coal B. stone C. rock D. dirt 21.A. …… 此处隐藏:5203字,全部文档内容请下载后查看。喜欢就下载吧 ……
