Smiley was born without eyes,but he is still able to work as a St.John’s Ambulance service

dog in Ontario. The dog’s owner, Jaanne George, rescued him from a puppy mill(幼犬滥育场) ,when

he was about 1or 2 years old.

“He was very scared ,because the dogs had never been out of that puppy mill, ” Georage

said ,adding that Smiley quickly boned with another one of his dogs , a deaf dog named Tyler.

“Tyler was so crazy and happy-go –lucky and Smiley became just like him, ” George said . “He

came out from under the tables where he was always hiding. ”

George said seeing Smiley interact with crowds made him realize he would be a perfect therapy

dog(治疗犬).She now brings the dog to the hospitals and the schools in the area and Smiley almost

always brightens peolple’s days.

She said at one nursing home, she realized how even a small visit with Smiley could make

people happy. “There was this man Teddy, who had no communication with anyone at all, ” George

said of one memorable nursing home resident(居民). “The staff had never seen Teddy smile

before. ” But when Smiley came up to Teddy, the staff were amazed . “ Teddy smiled when he

saw Smiley, ” George said.

After caring for Smiley for 10 years , George has learned a lot about how to care for blind

dogs. “Somebody wanted to adopt a dog that was blind, ” George said “I told her not to be

his eyes and not to run his life. ”She said it is key for Smiley to figure out how to get around

on his own without too much difficulty.

“Of course, he bumps into things sometimes. But he walks very carefully, ” George said.

“Have you noticed the dog’s high steps when he walks?He is feeling with his feet. ”
