What did

you notice? What did you notice about the language used in the

text messages in comparison to the sentences your group re-wrote? When is it appropriate to use informal language?

What are the benefits of using informal language in

everyday speech?

What is a sentence?A sentence is a group of words that contains a subject and verb to express a complete thought.

Parts of a Sentence 1) VERB: the verb tells what is happening in the

sentence. Without a verb, a sentence doesn’t exist. Verbs reveal action or state of being and usually shows the time of the whole sentence. Ie: She went, He will go, They have gone Which word is the verb in the following sentence? The crying baby annoyed the babysitter.

State-of-being verbs State-of-being verbs such as was and are don’t show

action but do show time. Ie: She was my first teacher. She will be my next teacher. Are the following sentences? Why or why not? a) The book on the sidewalk. b) The book lying on the sidewalk

Subject / Noun The Subject: is the person, place, thing, or idea being

discussed in the sentence. It’s what the sentence is about. Identifying the subject: Ie: Dolphins swim in the ocean. [Do the dolphins swim? Or

does the ocean swim?] Your turn: Identify the subject in the following sentence.

I ate my dinner last night.

The Rule of “S” Most plural nouns have an s at the end, but plural

present tense verbs do not contain an s on the end. For singular present tense nouns it’s the reverse. If the subject is girl, the verb is runs; if the subject is dogs, the verb is see. Ie: Frankie writes The teachers lecture

Common Sentence Problems1) Run-On sentences (AKA: marathon sentences):

Occurs when two or more sentences are joined together by only a comma or written as one sentence without punctuation. Examples: I saw a movie Sunday night it was about ninjas. I saw a movie Sunday night, it was about ninjas.

Ways to fix the sentence:

Use a period to separate sentences I saw a movie Sunday night. It was about ninjas. Connect the sentences with a comma and a conjunction such as and, but, so, for, or, nor or yet. I saw a movie Sunday night, and it was about ninjas. Connect the sentences using a semicolon I saw a movie Sunday night; it was about ninjas.

Sentence Problems continued 2) Sentence Fragment: a sentence fragment is an

incomplete thought. It may contain a capital letter and punctuation, but it is not a sentence. For it to be a sentence, the thought needs to be completed. FRAGMENT: When I go on vacation

COMPLETE: When I go on vacation, I like to lounge

on the beach with my toes in the sand.

A fragment is not a sentence for one of the following

reasons:a) The subject is missing: Delivered the paper to my

classroom. b) The verb is missi …… 此处隐藏:3857字,全部文档内容请下载后查看。喜欢就下载吧 ……
