Writing 1: Can smart cars make driving safer, quicker and less expensive?

The article states that smart cars can make driving safer, quicker and less expensive. However, in the lecture, the professor contradicts the arguments from three aspects.

First, the reading claims that smart cars will prevent many accidents and save lives because they are equipped with advanced sensors and automatic programs to control the cars to avoid collisions. Conversely, the professor controverts that the effects of advanced steering system are not clear. When there are many more cars on the road, the technical pilot could not avoid collisions.

Second, the article states that the traffic problems will practically disappear with the wide use of smart cars because these computer-controlled cars can follow each other closely at high speeds. On the contrary, the professor refutes that the speed can not decided by the techniques, but the numbers on the road. In a community, the cars can not drive at high speed during rush hours.

Last but not least, the reading says that smart cars can reduce the costs of driving because many expensive items can last much longer in the cars. However, the professor disagrees with the opinion. She says that the requirement of positioning system is definitely huge so that the service supported by satellites would be costly. The cost of repair and replacement of advanced technology items, such as sensors and control programs, is much more expensive than that in the traditional cars.

There is a popular saying: Think before you leap. Does it mean that a person should never make an important decision alone? You must think it over and let relatives and friends help you make the decision? In my point of view, I am afraid I disagree with the statements for the following reasons.

On one hand, others’ experience and suggestions would generally be suitable to you so that the decision would not be right. Although the experiences of my relatives and friends can not be evaluated enough, they only work as the reference. You are the only one who knows whether the clothing is fit or not when you wear it. You are the only one who knows whether the food is delicious or not when you eat it. Furthermore, you are the only one who will take the responsibility whatever the decision is. You will take in the final results produced by the decision. The decision is so important. Why do you let someone else make the decision for you? If the result is a disaster, who will take the responsibility? You or the decision-maker?

On the other hand, it is helpful to enhance the leadership by making decision alone. When my son was born, I took a class about how to perfect baby’s personalities. One part is of enhancing baby’s leadership. The teacher told us never to replace the baby to make a decision. For example, when we set out to the daycare every morning, traditionally, we prepared the fruits without asking the baby’s intention. That is to say, we substituted the baby to decide which fruits he should take. Sometimes, the baby did not like the fruit you decided and he left it in the box and back home. On the contrary, before we set out, we asked the baby which fruits he wanted to take today and provided several options. The baby would usually decide his favorite and eat them in the daycare. When the baby was growing, he would know that he could make decisions by himself. He would

hence get good results from his decision. Gradually, he could enhance his leadership by making decisions in his group. That is a good way to improve one person’s leadership. As the number of making decision alone increases, the self-confidence would be upgraded and the leadership would be improved as well.

In conclusion, do not let someone else make the decision for you. You should make important decisions independently and improve your leadership. Even if the result is not good, you can also learn something from the failure.
