An icon in my life

There is no denying that we are bound to encounter different things and people on the life journey, from our families to kinfolks, classmates to coworkers, counselor to life partners. Some are just nodding acquaintances, some gradually faded away in our memory, but some, for no particular reason, are deeply engraved in our mind that no one can erase. Personally, my friend, whom I call an icon, is the person that has impresses me most in my life.

My best friend, by name of Cui Xinxin, was a simple girl with a smile on her face all the time. She wore short hair for which we called her a “fake boy”, but she never got annoyed. Instead, she told us that she looks stronger with short hair so that she could protect us in case of emergency, which never fail to amuse us. Plain as she might be, she possessed some personalities that not only influenced me but made her more charismatic and respectful.

One of the most conspicuous characters of her was her diligence. Since I was in the same class with her from primary school to high school, I witnessed her striving and persistence. She always acted as a model for the rest of her classmates in the way I did admire. Be it bitter cold or scorching hot, she was, without doubt, the first one to the class; be the class silent or noisy, she was constantly wrapped up in her books; be the homework difficult or easy, she handed it in without fail. Besides, whenever she got any spare time, she would go to the library to feed her hungry heart while others were playing to their hearts content..

Not that she was a bookworm who only cared about her study and was self-engrossed in my eye. Instead, she had a positive attitude towards life and seldom gave way to what seemed impossible and exceedingly tough to her. Born in an extended family, she had two younger sisters. Life was not so easy for her because both her parents were peasants whose income sometimes could barely make both ends meet. In order to ease the burden of her parents, she often did part-time jobs to support herself without asking any money from her family. However, what made the situation worse was the death of the backbone of her family— her father, making her almost collapsed. Although she was heartbroken at that time, she never shed a tear and deteriorated because of the disaster. Brave and even more dogged, she went on her life and still shared her charming smile to us, which moved me in a large sense. It was her positive attitude and her way of living that gave me unlimited spiritual resources and convinced me that this was the very person I should learn form. More importantly, she made believe that all things shall pass.

Life is full of unexpected surprises as well as challenges which make us understand and indentify who we are and that we have the reason to be who we are. But more often than not, what makes me feel really blessed is that in the process of growing, I have a person who is always accompanying me, guiding me in an intangible way, and serving as an icon who seldom fail to impress me positively.
