It is the nickname for the First Yale Unit, a naval air reserve unit considered to be the first in the United States. It was started by F. Trubee Davison, a Yale

sophomore at the time, in 1915. The unit had 29 members who were all wealthy and fascinated by flying. Their intention was to learn to fly airplanes so as to develop American’s military aviation.
